Forensic Psychology
What Is Forensic Psychology?
Forensic psychology is a type of applied psychology that works primarily within the legal and criminal justice system. Sometimes this discipline is referred to as criminological or investigative psychology. The field of forensic psychology aims to use psychological theories, from the many branches of this discipline, to explain and treat criminal behavior. Some people define a forensic psychologist as any professional whose primary role is to provide psychological expertise to the judicial system.
A common role for a forensic psychologist is to specialize in the clinical practice of the discipline. Such professionals are concerned with the mental health of their clients and are often involved in evaluating and diagnosing various mental health disorders in criminals, or defendants in civil suits. These professionals may have to decide whether a law offender is sane enough to stand trial, or whether a parent is mentally competent to gain custody of a child. Other roles for forensic psychologists may include picking sympathetic jurors for a legal trial, or working with law enforcement to carry out criminal profiling.
Another role for individuals with a forensic psychology degree is to conduct research in an academic setting like a college or university. Such professionals may be concerned with the reliability of eye-witness identification or the phenomenon of false memories. These researches may publish their findings in academic journals or present their work to law enforcement agencies or to the judicial system.
